How we compute trends
Trends cover 21 countries and territories across Latin America and the Caribbean, from Mexico to Argentina, including Caribbean islands (Cuba, Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico). Data are derived from ERA5 reanalysis (2020-2025). Temperature and humidity values are annual means compared to a 1991-2020 baseline. Acceleration measures how the rate of change itself is changing over 10-year and 30-year windows. Heat stress trends use UTCI (Universal Thermal Climate Index) computed at an elevated metabolic rate of 300 W, representing outdoor labor conditions rather than the standard resting assumption.
